There is one weekend left before Christmas! The kids are about to go on winter break, your family members are planning to roll into town and you could benefit from some inexpensive, family-friendly, Christmas entertainment. Scottish Rite Theater has got you covered. The Second Shepherds’ Play wraps this weekend with five more shows between Saturday, Dec. 21 and Sunday, Dec. 22. It’s the perfect place to enjoy this funny, medieval Christmas mystery.
Guest writer, Quel of Homegirl Blog, has seen the play a few times since it was her son’s stage debut. Here is what she thinks of the play…
I had the pleasure of attending three shows already. My son, Zack, made his stage debut as one of the gaggle of kids in the shows last weekend. For a 5-year-old, he did an awesome job following directions and staying in character in his first two shows. I learned my lesson by the third show, that 5 is actually a bit young for back to back stage performances. Why? Because he decided that it might be kinda fun to wake up (although he was supposed to be asleep) and pet the sheep (actually an older kid in costume) who was exploring his stage home. On the bright side, he was totally comfortable up there, which is all kinds of awesomesauce.
He won’t be there for the shows this weekend, but you should be! It’s great entertainment for the whole family. The actors are great with interacting with the kids during the show. Most of the play is full of comical moments, and when the gorgeous angel appears (seriously, every little girl there will be mesmerized) and sings an amazing duet with the beautiful mother Mary. You can join in and sing a classic Christmas song with the cast at the end and will feel all the fuzzy Christmas feelings–all of them.
If you’ve never been to Scottish Rite Theater, here’s what you can expect:
Kids all get to sit front and center on floor pillows in the carpeted area on the floor, while the grownups get to enjoy the show from their seats. There is plenty free parking at this downtown theatre and the waiting area is like a beautiful, enormous living room with amazing wood coffee tables, a superfluous amount of leather armchairs and leather sofas for lounging and wood floors covered with lovely area rugs perfect for kids with busy legs to get their wiggles out while you wait for the house to open. There are crayons for kids to color their programs while they wait as well. Where else are you going to take your family, in Austin the weekend before Christmas for good, stress-free, quality, holiday entertainment for less that ten bucks a head?
Purchase tickets online, here, for $9 for adults and $6 for kids 12 and under.
