On Saturday, February 20, families are invited to the LBJ Library Auditorium for a very special production about the Civil Rights Movement. The Pollyanna Theatre Company is proud to present Liberty! Equality! And Fireworks!, a play that shares very important history lessons of the 1960s. Set in a museum, the play’s characters (a group of 4th grade students) experience key elements of the Civil Rights Movement when iconic images from this important period of our national history come to life and begin to move and speak. The production, best suited towards ages 8 & up, will begin at 2 p.m. and is open to the public, free of charge.
The play was written as a commission by award-winning playwright Gregory Perrin for Pollyanna Theatre Company who notes:
“History is important, but many of our children feel that it is boring because it has nothing to do with them. My goal is that the children seeing this play will leave with questions about what they have seen, which hopefully will lead to conversations with parents, grandparents, teachers and friends. These conversations – though difficult or unpleasant – need to happen,”
The LBJ Library’s Education Department helped create educational resources to accompany the show, which are available free of charge, found online here, for all adults who attend the production. The materials explore the Civil Rights Movement and include recommendations on how to navigate children through this very important topic.
No tickets are required for this show. It is completely FREE.
