Head to your local movie theater for a fun outing with the kids! There are several local places offering free or very inexpensive films for families. Here’s a round-up of where to go in Austin for children’s summer movies:

–> Alamo Drafthouse Summer Kids Camp offers a lineup of family favorites and a new choose-your-own ticket price option ($1 – $3) with proceeds benefiting local charities. Get your tickets in advance on the Alamo Drafthouse website. New this year, be sure to pick up your free Summer Fun Card where you can win prizes for seeing movies at the Alamo. But below you can see what’s offered each month:

–> Sound & Cinema
We’re so excited for another summer season of Sound & Cinema, presented by Texas Lottery®! This annual paring of FREE music & films from Do512 & Alamo Drafthouse takes place on the lawn of the Long Center and is a perfect excuse to hang out with friends on a Wednesday, sample bites from Austin’s delicious food trucks, and let the kids stay up past bedtime on a carefree summer night. Here’s this year’s lineup:

  • June 21Princess Bride featuring ICING (covering Cake)
  • June 28Raising Arizona featuring The Quaker City Night Hawks
  • July 19Galaxy Quest featuring Special Guest (TBA)
  • July 26Scott Pilgrim vs. The World featuring A Giant Dog

The food trucks will open at 6pm each night, with the sunset concerts beginning around 7:30pm. The movies will begin shortly after dark (around 8:45pm).


–> Regal Summer Movie Express is back at Regal Westgate Stadium 11 and Regal Gateway Stadium 16 for $1 movie admission for shows at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Click here for more info, and check out the schedule below:

cinemarksummer2015–> The Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse program offers 10 movies throughout the summer for only $1 per ticket, or you can purchase a pass for all 10 movies for only $5. –> Summer Free Family Film Series
This takes place at the Bullock Museum with the theme: A Magical Fantastical Adventure. These programs are free and open to the public with preferred seating for Museum members. You will find some old favorites, and discover some soon to be. No RSVP required. These movie screenings start at 2 p.m. in the Texas Spirit Theater on the 2nd floor of the museum. The films include:

  • June 3: Matilda
  • June 10: Alice in Wonderland
  • July 1: The Black Cauldron
  • July 22: My Neighbor Totoro
  • August 5: The Secret of Kells
  • August 12: Where the Wild Things Are

  • Community Cinema at Community First Village offers movies on Friday nights with a suggested donation of $5. Click here to see what’s playing (not always for young kids).
  • You can also also check out the lineup of the annual 101X Summer Cinema at Stubbs Waller Creek Amphitheatre. (Although not all films will be kid-friendly.)
