While we may be experiencing a frostier-than-usual winter here in Austin, Mama Fu’s Asian House is planning a HOT fundraiser to warm even the coldest January day. Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 20 when the popular fast-casual, family-friendly restaurant will present Chilis for Charity — a unique way to give back to the Austin community. Five local charities will attempt to eat their way through increasingly spicy chili peppers and collect their share of a $25,000 prize pool!
Everyone is invited to come out to the Southpark Meadows location on January 20 from 1-3 p.m. to witness the pepper-eating madness, but also to enjoy some fun and great food, too. Mama Fu’s has recently introduced their new Spice Market Menu featuring hot dishes such as Rangoon Poppers, Jalapeño Brisket Fried Rice, Honey Sriracha Skewers, and more. (Click here to see photos from when we sampled the menu.) During the event, order off this Spice Market Menu, and 50 percent of sales will be donated to the charities.

Participating charities include:

Each organization is allowed up to two champions to compete on the charity’s behalf. Each champion will have to chew and swallow up to nine increasingly spicy peppers that span from a simple jalapeno to the hottest pepper on planet Earth, the Carolina Reaper. As the Scoville heat units of each pepper level increase, so does the amount of cash each organization can collect.

The challenge will be hosted by Bama Brown, morning host  from KVET 98.1 FM, and the event will also include pet adoptions from Austin Pets Alive, Spice Market samples, music from DJ Hella — and maybe a few cries for help from the stage!

Take note that the giving doesn’t end on January 20th. For the following three weeks, you can eat at any Mama Fu’s and mention one of the 5 charities, and they will donate $1 for every entree you order.
