McKinney Falls State Park is a great place to go enjoy the outdoors with the whole family. Located 13 miles from downtown Austin, McKinney Falls State Park offers hiking, biking, picnicking and camping along the banks of Onion Creek. On Saturday, August 29 you can go on a Full Moon Hike, and on Sunday, August 30, you can learn all about Geocaching and Atlatl. Check out the details below about upcoming fun at the park!

The following events are free with paid admission ($6 per adult, kids 12 and under are free). See what’s coming up:

Full Moon Hike: Saturday, August 29, 8 p.m.
Join a ranger for a nighttime exploration of McKinney Falls. Participants will hunt for scorpions, listen for owls, and search for spiders. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight.

Geocaching 101: Sunday, August 30, 9 a.m.
Learn all about the exciting new sport of geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt using GPS units. Geocaching is a great way to explore new places and it’s the perfect activity for all ages. GPS units will be provided. Please sign up by e-mailing Ranger Jenn at [email protected].

Atlatl Demo: Sunday, August 30, 1:30 p.m.
Before there was the bow and arrow, there was the atlatl. This program will teach you about this prehistoric spear-throwing tool, as well as give you the opportunity to try it out for yourself!

Become a Jr. Park Ranger (anytime during park office hours)
Do you think your kids would like to become a park ranger? Kids can complete a Junior Ranger activity book and earn their official badge. All you have to do is ask at the front office for a book, then bring it back when you’re all done. This program can be completed during park office hours, and all ages are welcome to participate.
