Homeschool families are invited to a special day of exploration and learning at the Bullock Texas State History Museum on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Museum exhibitions and all programs are free during Homeschool Day, but to participate, please submit an RSVP here.

–> Classes:
Please note, space is limited in these first-come, first-serve classes. You can pick up a ticket for your students when you arrive at the Museum.

  • 10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Float Your Boat – Students ages 7 and up will learn what it takes to construct a boat that floats and do a short science experiment in this classroom session presented by Central Texas Discover Engineering
  • 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Amazing Adaptations – How do humpback whales swim, float, and stay warm as they live their lives in the oceans? Students ages 7 and up will discover some amazing whale adaptations, and experiment with “blubber” in this science class.
  • 11:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Float Your Boat – Students ages 7 and up will learn what it takes to construct a boat that floats and do a short science experiment in this 25-minute classroom session presented by Central Texas Discover Engineering.
  • 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Historical Navigation Tools – How did explorers travel across oceans and continents with only basic maps and tools to guide them? Learn what navigation was like before GPS, and make a compass to take home in this class geared toward learners ages 8 and up.

  • Visit with staff from PBS-KLRU and the Texas Historical Commission to find out about online learning resources.
  • Hone observational skills with an activity guide for the exhibition, La Belle: The Ship That Changed History.
  • Discover why more than 700,000 tiny glass beads travelled from France to North American on explorer La Salle’s expedition, and make your own strand of beads to take home.
  • Learn how to tie a nautical knot similar to those that were used for rigging on the ship, La Belle.
  • Get up close and personal with arrowheads at a flint knapping demonstration on the Museum’s Lone Star Plaza from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Gather resources about La Belle: The Ship That Changed History and Humpback Whales 3D to incorporate into a learning curriculum.
  • Where will your imagination take you? At Story Time, 2-6 year olds will enjoy an experience just for them with hands-on activities, stories, songs, games, and more! Story Time does not require a ticket. Just drop in from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
