Austin, we know you love to shop local and support our creative, talented community of artists and makers! So join us in support of the City of Austin’s Shop Zero Waste initiative. This season, the City of Austin encourages us to think a little differently about our holiday shopping by giving gifts that also give back to the environment. Instead of shopping for name brand gifts at big stores, we can support local and eco-friendly businesses instead. Shop Zero Waste challenges us to reduce waste by seeking unique gifts from Austin-owned vendors that sell recycled, upcycled, or reused items.
You can search for small businesses that support Shop Zero Waste in an online directory found at LocallyAustin.org. This website includes listings of Austin businesses that provide fun alternatives to buying new, featuring holiday gifts that are [Re]made, [Re]paired and [Re]shared. You can help reduce waste, discover unique items, save money, and reduce clutter by purchasing items from these businesses.
Some of our favorite places to Shop Zero Waste include:
— Recycled Reads: Get bargain prices on books, DVDs, CDs, and more at Recycled Read, Austin Public Library’s used bookstore. With a great variety of children’s and adult titles, you’re sure to find something here for everyone. Take note that Recycled Reads also hosts lots of fun, free events including storytimes and more. Click here to view their calendar.
— Austin Creative Reuse Center: We are huge fans of this mecca of all things crafty. Austin Creative Reuse Center includes a retail shop, workshop space and a gallery. Here you’ll find a wide assortment of materials (from textiles to art supplies to little knick knacks) that will inspire your next arts or crafts project.
— Gamerz Galaxy: Brand new video games can be pretty pricey. Why not buy used that work just as well and keep the kiddos happy? Gamerz Galaxy at Lakeline Mall is a family owned and operated shop that sells new and used video games and related collectibles.
— Kid Frolic Austin: Have a child’s birthday party to host? No need to go out and spend tons of money on all new party goods and decorations. Kid Frolic lets you rent costumes, handmade decorations, tableware, and more for party and play times.
Achieving Austin’s Zero Waste goal requires new ways of thinking about how we buy, use and dispose of everyday items. Instead of buying brand new, shop Zero Waste and help benefit our local economy and keep products out of landfills, all while still knocking out your holiday shopping list.
