Each year, high school and college students from across the country come to participate in Summer Stock Austin to learn about every part of a professional theatre company. The “company” rehearses for to share fully produced musicals in the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center, and you can catch these talented young performers in several productions this summer. The 2018 season includes The Music Man, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or Rob1n, a new play for children, as well as the return of Theatre for All Day Camp — a special drop-off immersive theatre experience with the Summer Stock cast and crew for elementary-aged kids.
–> The Music Man, July 20 – August 11
This musical theatre classic follows con man Harold Hill as he swindles the Midwestern town of River City into believing he is a band leader. He sells instruments and uniforms to the children of the town, promising to train them and form a band. Of course, all of his plans change when he meets Marian, the librarian. The show features memorable songs such as as “Ya Got Trouble,” “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Pick-a-Little,” and “Til There Was You. Click here for showtimes & to purchase tickets.
–> Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, August 1 – 11
Based on the popular 1988 film starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tells the story of Lawrence Jameson and Freddy Benson, two con men who decide to work together after a chance meeting on a train. They compete to attempt to swindle a small town in the French Riviera, specifically targeting young heiress, Christine Colgate, but soon discover that only one can succeed. Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score, this show promises hijinks and hilarity. Click here for showtimes & to purchase tickets.
–> Rob1n, (children’s show) July 24 – August 11
From the brilliant minds of Allen Robertson and Damon Brown comes the premiere of another exciting, new, family-friendly musical, Rob1n. A modern day re-imagining of a legendary hero. She’s the world’s greatest thief with a soft spot for anyone facing injustice. She’s putting together a crew to pull of a risky $20 million heist that could change her community forever. But it turns out that robbing from the rich to give to the poor makes the rich a little upset. –> Theatre-For-All Day Camp, August 2, 3, 7 & 8
Sign the kids up for the Theatre-For-All Day Camp hosted by Summer Stock Austin. This special one-day of theatre for ages 5 to 12 will include a performance of Rob1n, the World Premiere of a musical by the Biscuit Brothers’ Allen Robertson and Damon Brown; a backstage tour and meet-and-greet with the cast; theatre games, improvisation workshop and much more! Plus all children will learn an original song with choreography from the show to be performed at the end of your camp experience!
One-Day Camp sessions cost $50 for ages 5-8 & $65 for ages 9-12. Children will need to bring their own sack lunch. Session times are 10:30 a.m. -3 p.m. for ages 5-8, and 10:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. for ages 9-12. Click here to sign up!
