It’s that time of year, have you noticed it? Warm days (but not too warm, yet!), balmy evenings…Perfect for, say, a nice walk in the park?
Walk with purpose this Saturday, Feb. 22 at Illuminate Austin: A Walk for Safe Families from 4:30 – 8 pm at Mueller Lake Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Bring your whole family and join together as a community for an early evening stroll through the park, along a path lined with beautiful luminarias. This fun, family-friendly event benefits SafePlace, which provides shelter and essential services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Austin.
There will be lots for the kiddos to do while there, including a station where families can decorate luminaria bags before lining them up along the path, dancing to the tunes of a DJ who’s donated his time, and a free photo booth. You and your family can also add your handprints to a canvas, symbolizing your commitment to be a courageous bystander by not looking away in the face of violence. For kids, that might mean standing up to a bully or making friends with a kid who seems isolated.
Here’s the schedule:
- 4:30 pm – Check-in/Registration
- 4:30 – 5:30 pm – Vendors, Art Activities, Photo Booth, Kids’ Activities
- 5:45 pm – Welcome from Executive Director
- 6 pm – WALK BEGINS
Register here for the event. A registration fee is not required, but participants are encouraged to make a $20 donation and receive a 2014 Illuminate Austin t-shirt. Additional fundraising is welcomed and greatly appreciated!
