Take advantage of no-school nights at the SXSW Eco Light Garden in Republic Square Garden. The park lights up nightly through March 15. When the sun goes down, Republic Square Park is transformed into a dreamy space that plays with light and sound and geometry.
I arrived there with my son at 8 pm and there were a mix of kids, young adults and dogs in tutus enjoying the neon lights and ambient music coming from all corners of the park. My 6-year-old’s favorite installation is the Luminescent Grand, the world’s first ever interactive LED grand piano! It has a clear body and all the keys and strings are a rainbow of lights, so when you play it, you’re not only making music, but a seriously cool light show. That thing is worth braving the parking situation alone.
Make an evening of it. Grab dinner at Austin Java or one of the many restaurants around 2nd St., then walk down to the park and enjoy experiencing something together that you’ve never experienced before…for free!
