This weekend you can listen to scary campfire stories, watch movies in the park, unleash your sci-fi side at Comic Con, teach the kids to fish, check out chalk art masterpieces, have a blast at a free kids music party, hunt for bugs by flashlight, take the family through a corn maze, watch a play about a vampire bunny, check out one of Austin’s most historic homes and much much more!

Friday:

  Wizard World Austin Comic Con will be at the Austin Convention Center through Saturday. Kids can come meet the original Green Power Ranger, enter a costume contest, check out more than 100 vendors who’ll be showcasing rare comics, lightsabers, Minecraft and Dr. Who collectibles, and much more! Tickets start at $39.95 and can be purchased online here, and kids ages 10 and under are FREE Check out the lineup of celebrities here as well as schedule highlights.

—  Ooooooh, Halloween is just around the corner, and that means it’s an especially great time for scary ghost stories! Take the big kids (ages 8 and up) to McKinney Falls State Park for Scary Campfire Stories from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Admission to the park is $6 for adults, free for children 12 and under, and campsites are $20 which you can reserve online here.

—  Take the kids to a free movie in the park! There’s two great choices for a fun Friday night under the stars. The Jungle Book is playing in Mueller Park event with face painting and food trucks at 6:30 p.m. and the movie at dusk. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is playing in Elizabeth Milburn Park at 7:30 p.m.

 Saturday:

— Have you ever wanted to take the kids fishing, but you have no idea where to start? Take the kids to McKinney Falls State Park at 9 a.m. to participate in the Go Fish! program where they’ll teach you how to fish for free! Read more about what to bring and what to expect here.

— The Hush Hush Music Bash for Kids is a free, family-friendly party taking place from 5-8:30 p.m. at The Domain and will feature many of the awesome musicians who will be playing on the Austin Kiddie Limits stage. Bring the kids for face painting, cupcake decorating, costumed characters, photo booth and more! 

— Round Rock’s Centennial Park will transform into a super cool arts festival at the 5th Annual Chalk Walk from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. With a new location this year, this free event is expected to be bigger and better than ever! In addition to the amazing chalk art, families are invited to check out hands-on kids activities, a free Biscuit Brothers’ concert, a donut-eating contest, and much more. — Enjoy some outdoor family time at the Fall Festival & Corn Maze at Barton Hill Farms where you’ll find games, a “Go Horns” corn maze, pumpkin patch, farm animals and more. Open Saturdays 10 a.m. – 10 pm. and Sundays 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. through Nov. 9, 2014. Admission is $8 for ages 3-10 and $11 for ages 11 and up and includes entry into the corn maze. An Adventure Pass can be purchased for an additional $5 and includes unlimited access to a jumping pillow and train. Children ages 2 and under are free. SAVE $1 by ordering tickets in advance here. — Take your little explorers to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for a Bug Night Out from 7-9 p.m. to hunt for insects on a guided flashlight tour. Admission to the Wildflower Center is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and children 13 and up, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for children ages 4 and younger as well as members.

Sunday:

Bunnicula looks like a typical cuddly rabbit, but he’s the spookiest bunny around! Kids will love this play with live music and puppetry, based on the popular book series, playing at the Scottish Rite Theater at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for children ages 12 and under and $12 for ages 13 and up and can be purchased at the theater or in advance online here. — Take a step back in time and try games and activities that children would have enjoyed in the 1800s at the free family-friendly Sunday-Funday event at Austin’s Neill-Cochran House Museum. Pop into one of Austin’s most historic homes from 1 – 4 p.m. for tours and a hands-on activity for kids. Free!

  1. Don’t forget the Austin Gem and Mineral Society’s Gem Capers show at the Palmer Events Center all weekend! It’s very kid-friendly!
