15 Minutes for a Lifetime of Peace of Mind
Vasectomies are the most effective type of birth control, more so than a tubal ligation, condom, Birth control pills, IUD, or other methods. A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure that only takes about 15 minutes. In many cases, insurance will cover all or most of the cost. For most men, the most uncomfortable part is the pre-procedure shave! At Austin Urology Institute, patients are offered an optional pre-procedure sedative and then the area is numbed with a topical spray (no needles). From there, a small incision is made and the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra) is clipped and a section is removed. Then you’re stitched up and ready to be on your way. With the vas deferens no longer connected, sperm can’t travel out of the testicles, allowing you to make love without making babies.
Be Honest, Doc. How Much Does it Hurt?
Vasectomies sound a lot more painful than they actually are. I tell my patients to take day to rest and recover, then apply an ice pack to the scrotum for a few days. Our patients are given a strong version of Ibuprofen to take for 2-3 days. You’ll be back in action in the bedroom in a week.
You Won’t Know the Difference
Some guys are concerned that a vasectomy will negatively impact them somehow in the boudoir. Vasectomies don’t affect sex drive, erections or orgasm. Everything will seem the same way that it was before, except that you won’t get pregnant.
