Here are our Top Austin Family Events…
— Take the little ones to hold little furry animals at Safari Champ in Round Rock at 10:30 a.m. Tiny Tails to You Traveling Petting Zoo will be there the 2nd Friday of every month. Tickets are $12 per child for ages 2 & up and $9 per child for ages 12-23 months. This includes admission Safari Champ’s indoor playground, storytime, time with the animals and an educational animal craft or activity. Call 512-828-0000 to reserve your spot.
— Enjoy a special Norm of the North Crafternoon at Howson Branch of the Austin Public Library at 3:30 p.m. Kids of all ages can make polar bear puppets and enjoy some Norm of the North activity books. Free.
— If fitness goals are part of your plan for the new year, check out the Open House at TRAVA today and tomorrow. This south Austin fitness studio offers classes for the whole family in yoga, pilates, barre, kickboxing, dance, nutrition and more. The family-friendly open house event will offer free demo classes & giveaways from 5-9 p.m. (And also on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
— Drop by The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m for Home Tweet Home, a free workshop where kids can design a modern birdhouse as part of the monthly Second Saturdays are for Families series. Kids can be good neighbors to our feathered friends by creating a warm place for them to hang out this winter. Recommended for ages 2 – 11. Free.
— Are your kids fans of Gerald and Piggie? Paramount Theatre is bringing them live on stage in a production of “Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play” on Sunday, January 31. And to celebrate the excitement of this upcoming show, Paramount Theatre will be at BookPeople today at 11:30 a.m. or very special storytime highlighting their upcoming production. Enjoy a lively storytime and enter a raffle and win tickets to the show.
— Go ice skating on the plaza! Today’s the LAST DAY to enjoy this fun wintertime activity at the Whole Foods Market Downtown rooftop ice rink. The cost is $10 per person. Open from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
— Kids can enjoy 2 hours of Minecraft free play at the Howson Branch of the Austin Public Library today at 2 p.m. Laptops will be available, but you can also bring your own or other mobile device that has Minecraft downloaded! This is recommended for ages 7 and up. Free.
— It’s Free Family Day at Umlauf Sculpture Garden! Take the kids for yoga, story time, art and music in the beautiful gardens full of sculptures (that are okay for the kids to touch). Free and open to the public from noon – 4 p.m.
— If your preschoolers love to dance, bring them to Recycled Reads from 2-3 p.m. for the StoryBook Dance Making event where you’ll create a dance based on a book’s theme. This free class is taught by artists of Dance Waterloo, an interdisciplinary dance collective in Austin. Drop-ins are welcome, but you can register in advance here so they know you’re coming.
— Today’s your LAST CHANCE to check out the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss at Art for the People Gallery. See limited edition artwork from Theodor Seuss Geisel. It’s a whimsical collection of his personal paintings, and his Unorthodox Taxidermy collection of the craziest wall mount animal sculptures you have ever seen. Free. Open from noon – 6 p.m.
