5 Unique Ways to Get Fit in Austin

If you’re anything like us, the idea of hustling over to the gym makes you want to cry big, fat tears. Don’t worry, though, we’ve got your back (and your abs, legs, thighs, and arms, for that matter). Check out the myriad ways you can stay fit in Austin without lifting a single weight. Here’s some fitness options for both parents and kids!

TRAPEZE CLASSES
Good for: Strength Training; Conditioning; Toning; Full Body Workout
Our Pick: Sky Candy

Sky Candy offers a great drop-in class for people who have never done any aerial work before. The knowledgeable instructors will guide you through trying your hand at Aerial Silks, Aerial Hammock, Trapeze, and Lyra (a big metal ring). After you’ve decided which apparatus fits you best, you can sign up for one of their four-week workshops built around that apparatus.

ROCK CLIMBING

Good for: Full Body Workout, Strenth Training, Upper Body, Conditioning
Our Pick:
Crux Climbing Center

Crux has it all: Rock climbing walls, bouldering walls, a bouldering cave with overhead hangs, and an auto belay. They also have a mini gym upstairs where you can train with traditional weights or build up your grip strength. All of their instructors are very knowledgeable and happy to help you perfect your climbing techniques. They also offer classes on everything from how to fall properly to how to top rope safely.

Other climbing gyms: Austin Bouldering Project, North Austin Rock Gym

NONTRADITIONAL YOGA CLASSES

Good for: Strength Training; Conditioning; Toning; Full Body Workout
Our Pick: GOGA Goat Yoga

There are plenty of awesome yoga studios around Austin (check out our guide to Where To Yoga here for a few of the best). But this is Austin, y’all. There are tons of studios and companies offering unique twists on regular ol’ yoga. Check out Vino Vinyasa‘s events around town, where yoga and wine tasting are bundled together for the ultimate good vibes (for 21+). If doing yoga without the company of cute baby animals just isn’t cutting it for you these days, try goat yoga, which you can find at GOGA. Mix it up and try something new!

Other studios offering nontraditional yoga classes: Mind Body Yoga, Yogapeutics, other yoga events

AERIAL SILK CLASSES
Good for: Strength Training; Conditioning; Toning; Full Body Workout
Our Pick: Blue Lapis Light

If you dipped your toe into Sky Candy’s aerial intro course and found yourself head over heels (probably literally) for Aerial Silks, we encourage you to check out Blue Lapis Light. Lapis promises full-body conditioning, core strengthening, and building muscle. You also get a unique hobby and a killer bod.
