It’s Halloween weekend! You can take your pick of fun costume parties and events. Join us at the Thinkery’s Halloween Hootenanny, trick-or-treat for books at Bookpeople, check out the great cosplay at Wizard World Comic Con, watch the big parade & party in the streets during Viva la Vida Festival, and be sure to come out and wrap up the weekend with us at the BiG Bash at Hat Creek Burger Co.!

Come join us at a very special Thinkery Family Night  from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Show off your costume at the Halloween Hootenanny where you can explore the Thinkery after hours with lots of special hands-on stations full of spooky science activities such as exploding pumpkins, glow-in-the-dark slime, and much more. Tickets are $12 for members, $15 for non-members and free for kids under age 2. Click here to purchase your tickets.

— The Bullock Texas State History Museum is hosting a party for families from 5-8 p.m. Put on your costumes and head over to their annual Spooktacular, a Halloween extravaganza featuring performances, games and art. This year’s program will introduce children and their families to Texas “creepy crawlies” through activities and special screenings of Flight of the Butterflies in the IMAX Theatre. Get hands-on with spooky science from Girlstart. Free!

— UPDATE: This event has been cancelled due to rain.  Everyone’s invited to the Creative Action Kids’ Ball, a free, interactive event with treats, kid and family-friendly activities, and dancing at Central Market North Lamar from 5-8 p.m. Build your own costume there or wear your own. White Ghost Shivers will perform. Free! (Note, if it’s raining, the activities will take place in the tented area near the Central Market Cafe.)

— Take the little ones to BookPeople at 11:30 a.m. to Trick or Treat for Books. A Halloween storytime will take place in the amphitheater, featuring stories full of monsters, ghosts, and witches (but none of them will be too scary). After storytime, join the costume parade around the store, and then kids can get their treat — a free book to bring home! This Halloween Party is perfect for witches and wizards ages 7 and under. Free!

*This event has been rescheduled to Saturday, Nov. 7 due to weather. Head out to the grounds of the Texas School for the Deaf in your Halloween costume and enjoy races, music, food trucks, trick-or-treating and festival games with proceeds that benefit both the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation and Heal Kenya. Everyone of all ages — deaf and hearing — is invited. The Halloween Festival runs from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. with free admission, and $1 tickets sold on-site for carnival games, inflatables, and more.

— Check out some amazing costumes, meet celebrities, see rare comics, the Batmobile, Star Wars collectibles and so much more at  Wizard World Austin Comic Con at the Austin Convention Center from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. See Mike Tyson, Bruce Campbell, Peter Weller and more! Bring the whole family along because kids ages 10 and under are free with a paid adult. 1-Day Saturday admission is $49.95 which you can purchase online here.

— Austin’s largest Dia de los Muertos event happens today from 12 – 8 p.m. in downtown Austin. The Mexic-Arte Museum and The City of Austin will host the annual Viva la Vida Festival — a free street festival that includes a Grand Parade/Procession, artists and musicians, local food trucks and hands-on art activities for kids. UPDATE: Due to rain in the forecast, the festival will move to Brazos Hall (204 E 4th St.). The parade is still scheduled to start at noon. And the education activities will still take place as planned at Frost Bank.

*This event has been canceled due to weather. Looking for an alternative to your traditional Halloween activities? Check out Austin BikeFest on Saturday, October 31. This event is free and open to the public from 12 – 4 p.m. at Govalle Park. BikeFest is a celebration of the Austin bicycle community and will include a bike-through haunted house, costume contest, an obstacle course, bike games, food, craft beer and more.

— *This event has been canceled due to weather. Join us at Hat Creek Burger Company in Georgetown from 3-6 p.m. at the family-friendly BiG Bash.  Children can jump in a bouncy house, get a balloon animal, get their faces painted, and pet adorable animals in a petting zoo. All kids activities are completely FREE! You can enjoy live music and $1 beer specials. Hat Creek is also donating twenty-five percent of the entire day’s sales to Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG). We hope to see you there!

— Celebrate Day of the Dead by taking the kids to see “Just a Minute: A Dia de los Muertos Play” at Austin Scottish Rite Theater. This is the last day to catch performances of this children’s play! See it a 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for children 12 & under and $13 for ages 13 and up. You can order your tickets online here or get them at the box office before the show.
