This weekend you can keep cool with children’s theatre and all the ice cream you can handle, or you can get ourdoorsy with some nature journaling and a free outdoor movie. Either way, the weekend is lookin’ good. Here are your top 10 Austin family events…
Today:
— See Into the Woods, Jr. at ZACH Theatre at either 2 or 7 pm. This production is put on by ZACH’s pre-professional students. They will perform one of the most challenging vocal scores in theatre, be sure to check them out! Tickets are $8 – $10 and can be purchased here.
— Join The Art Garage for their Tie-Dye Fridays, where kids can learn step-by-step instructions on how to make a tie-dye shirt. Call ahead with your shirt size -> 512-852-9900. Cost of class, including materials is $16, 3 – 7 pm.
— Head to Ski Shores Cafe for their Family Movie Night. Tonight’s movie is Open Season, which will start at sundown. Free S’mores and extended playscape hours.
Tomorrow:
— The 7th Annual Ice Cream Festival will be from 10 am – 7 pm at Fiesta Gardens. Admission is $10 at the gate for 9 and up, kids 8 and under are FREE. Ticket includes all the free ice cream tastings you can handle! There will be live music, ice cream making, popsicle stick sculpturing, bounce houses, a kiddie train and more.
— Into the Woods, Jr. continues at ZACH Theatre. Showtimes are 2 & 7 pm, tickets are $8 – $10 and you can purchase them here.
— The Kid’s Fun and Diaper Drive at Brilliant Sky Toys and Books will have temporary tattoos, face painting and games for kids. Bring extra diapers for the Austin Diaper Bank! 10 am – 1 pm, free!
— The Open House at The Little Yoga House will give you a chance to check out their alternative preschool program: Yoga Peace School. There will be a 30-minute family yoga demo, refreshments and time to meet the amazing teaching staff. 11:15 am – 12:30 pm, free. Ages 3 – 5, preschoolers must be potty trained.
Sunday:
— Spend an afternoon Nature Journaling at the Zilker Botanical Gardens from 12 – 4 pm. Kids will create their own nature journal out of recycle materials and learn some new ways to sketch their findings. Program is free, entry to the garden is required and costs $2 for adults and $1 for children and seniors.
— The 6th Annual Back to School Parade will be at Bartholomew Park from 1 – 7 pm. The parade aims to provide school supplies for families in need. Wristbands will be given out from 1 – 2:30 pm and supplies will be given out at 4 pm so that your family can participate in the festivities. Here are all the details. Free.
— Painting With a Twist hosts Family Day from 12 – 1:30 pm. Kids will get step-by-step instruction from a local artist on how to complete a specific painting. $25, must make a reservation, you can do that here.
