Do512 Family - What to do in Austin with Kids

Austin Film Society’s Sunday School Family Screenings

Taking the kids to the movies can be such a fun treat for parents and kiddos alike. Usually, we plan our movie outings to see the latest popular family film that classmates are buzzing about or the ones that feature the favorite cartoon characters of the moment. But we often overlook a huge catalog of family flix — from oldies to indies to documentaries. It’s much harder to keep track of films that aren’t on our obvious radar.

The Austin Film Society has just the thing for young cinephiles and parents who are looking for something slightly less mainstream. Sunday School is a monthly family-friendly series at the Austin Film Society which aims to introduce young audiences to global classics that parents and kids can enjoy together. Sunday School programming has included such picks as Beasts of the Southern Wild, National Velvet, Popeye, and more.

Do512 Family is a proud sponsor of the AFS Sunday School Series, and we’d love to send a couple of readers to go experience a family show at the AFS Cinema. Scroll below to enter to win a 4-pack of tickets to one of these upcoming films…

–> The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, Sept. 23, 12 p.m.
The countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park, think again! Directors Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert adapt Renner’s own acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious, delightful triptych of interlocking stories, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick two-reelers.

–> Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Oct. 14, 1 p.m.
By 1948 the character-driven horror films at Universal had petered out – along with the careers of Abbott and Costello. The genius idea to combine the comedy duo (playing for laughs) and the monsters (playing it straight) was a hit. Although it was a swan song for the monsters it was the first in a series of four comedic horror films for Abbott & Costello. Come celebrate Halloween with AFS and laugh at the monsters and Abbott & Costello’s antics – no nightmares here!
