This season opener takes place at The Blood Shed, their practice space in South Austin. Here’s the schedule of events:

  • Opening Ceremony — 5:45 p.m.
  • 1st game at 6 p.m. — Hotrod Honeys vs Honky Tonk Heartbreakers
  • 2nd game at 7:45 p.m. — Hustlers vs Hell Marys

The Texas Rollergirls are Austin born and bred, formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind. Nine years later, the sport of flat track roller derby has grown exponentially and is now played by more than 1,000 leagues worldwide.

Not sure how roller derby is played? Basically, roller derby is a full-contact skating sport, played on a flat, oval track, in which points are scored by lapping members of the opposition. A team consists of up to 14 players, with up to 5 on the track at any given time. The Texas Rollergirls put together a really helpful “Roller Derby 101” guide on their website to teach you all about it. Click here to check it out.

Is this kid-friendly? Sure thing. You’ll definitely see kids in the audience. Kids might have more fun sitting on the floor just by the track to get a close-up look at the action. As with all sporting events, there may be some intense cheering and some potentially questionable language. And be prepared that kids may get tired after the first game and not wish to stick around for the 2nd game. But as you can see from the Texas Rollergirls Facebook page, there are plenty of happy kids featured in their Fan Cam galleries.
