Mo Willem’s beloved characters Gerald and Piggie sing, dance and have silly adventures in Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play at ZACH Theatre through Sunday, April 30. We had a chance to see this production with our kids and loved every minute of it. Read all about it below.
If your kids are big fans of this popular book series for young readers, then you’re definitely going to want to take them to this adorable show. This musical, written by Mo Willems with music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, includes scenarios from several of his books, featuring the delightful friendship between Gerald (played by David Peña) and Piggie (played by Amanda Clifton) with some musical comedy numbers by the Squirrelles (played by Megan Richards Wright, Jessica O’Brien and Kelly Petlin).
When reading the books, we’re always charmed by the love between Piggie, the outgoing pig, and Gerald, the anxious elephant. Their friendship is one for the ages. We’re so happy to report that this awesome chemistry between the characters transcends perfectly on ZACH’s stage. Both Peña and Clifton have a gift for bringing this dynamic duo to life. Clifton as Piggie has an magnetic energy and enthusiasm, while Peña as Gerald is both charmingly sensitive and hilarious at the same time.
The song and dance numbers featuring the Squirrells were such fun! They weave in and out of the show with really cute songs and colorful costume changes. Their song with Gerald featuring the “Should I Share My Ice Cream” story had us cracking up with big laughs.
The show provides a sweet dose of giggles, warm fuzzies, and smiles. It’s a great production for all ages from three-year-olds on up, with the sweet spot for those young readers who love diving into the pages of the Elephant and Piggie books.
The show runs 1 hour and 15 minutes with a 15 minute intermission. Everyone is invited to stick around and meet the actors for hugs and photos in the lobby after the show.
The show runs on Saturdays at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m. through Sunday, April 30 in ZACH’s Kleberg Theatre.
