Parents, we realize it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind of playdates, school, diapers, bedtime hissy-fits and all of the other love and sunshine that comes from our cherished littles. It’s easy to feel out of touch.
But, we beg you to Get A Sitter, to go out with your significant other and your friends and see some bands or check out a new restaurant or bar. There is SO MUCH going on in this city, embrace it. In honor of our family over at Do512, here are some events to check out without the kids.
Friday, May 8:
— Ballet Austin’s Swan Lake @ Long Center, 8 p.m.
Watch the exquisite and iconic classic…Swan Lake. It’s the timeless tale of love and loss on everyone’s “ballet bucket list.” This celebrated love story, infused with magic and intrigue from the innocence of the lovely Odette to the passion of Black Swan, Odile, provides all the magic of the world of ballet. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased online here.
— Action Pack: All Night Long ’80s Dance Party @ The Highball, 10:30 p.m.
Slip on your favorite leg warmers, crimp that hair and let loose with videos from the superstars of the 80s, because The Action Pack is pushing it to the limit! Whether you want to whip it or do the safety dance, you’ll feel like you’re walking on sunshine, because these interactive dance parties are simply irresistible. No cover.
— Sour Bridges Album Release with Calliope Musicals @ Historic Scoot Inn, 8 p.m.
Sour Bridges is Austin, TX’s premiere browngrass band. It’s like bluegrass, just a lil dirtier. Comprised of artists from every different corner of the country, Sour Bridges’ sound is an infectious combination of Texas folk, Appalachian bluegrass, and old-time rock and roll. This show is for ages 18 and up. $8 tickets in advance (online here) or $12 tickets at the door.
Saturday, May 9:
— Day 2 of Levitation Festival @ Carson Creek Ranch
Austin Psych Fest presents Levitation is a huge 3-day music and camping festival at Carson Creek Ranch. On Saturday, you can catch bands such as Thee Oh Sees, Primal Scream and The Jesus and Mary Chain. On Sunday, you can check out the Black Angels, Flaming Lips and more. — T Bird & the Breaks @ Continental Club, 10 p.m.
Expect soul, funk, and hip hop from T Bird & the Breaks. They’ll be joining The Sideshow Tragedy as they release their new album “Capital”. $10 cover at the door.

— Mother’s Day Hoppy Hour Petting Zoo & Dinner @ Historic Scoot Inn, 4 p.m.
Treat yo mama right by bringing her to the Scoot Inn for dinner specials for two, cute animals, and mimosas! Tiny Tails to You Austin’s Traveling Petting Zoo will be here with woodland creatures from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m.
