The 6th Annual Sherwood Forest Faire is in full-swing! This fun-filled, charming Renaissance Faire runs every weekend through Sunday, Mar. 29 from 10 a.m. – dusk. Located in McDade, Texas, the Faire is set in a 23-acre village in a wooded setting that features shoppes, pubs, restaurants and stages based on the tales of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. (Scroll below and enter to win a family 4-pack of tickets to the Faire!)
While every weekend includes a wide-variety of shows and entertainment including swordplay, comedy, magic, pirates, faeries, puppets and more, here are a few special highlights hat we just have to point out:
— Jousting Tournaments
The New Riders of the Golden Age will host two full-contact jousting tournaments! The first will be on Sherwood’s 4th weekend, Feb. 28 & Mar. 1, and the second Tournament will be on the final weekend, Mar. 28 & 29. Jousters will compete to win the king’s favor as the “mightiest knight in the realm!”
— Siege the Castle
The Siege of Nottingham Castle is causing quite a stir. Be sure to see this epic finale to each Faire Day at 5:30 p.m. enacted by the Sherwood Players.
— Notes from a 1st Timer:
Our Content Manager enjoyed her first-ever Sherwood Forest Faire experience last weekend. Read about her fun outing…
Having never previously visited any type of Renaissance festival, I really didn’t have any concept of quite how intricate all of the details of the Faire would be — from the setting to the costumes, entertainment, character acting and more — you literally feel like you are stepping into another world when you walk into the Sherwood Forest Faire. My husband, three boys and I arrived in plain clothes, and I regretted that immensely. I think about 85% of the people there were decked out in medieval attire and that made the experience all the more entertaining.
We walked the grounds with our mouths agape for the first half hour, just in awe of the sights and sounds. Grab a map at the front entrance to help you guide your way through this huge space. There are tons of little shops full of interesting handmade items. There’s tons of food for sale, too. But my kids were eager to try out some of the rides and features especially for children such as the giant swing, carousel, camel rides, petting zoo and maze. Note that there is a fee for each ride, ranging from about $2-$6 per person.
My family had two favorite “can’t miss” features of the Faire — the Sky Kings Birds of Prey show and the jousting competition. We loved watching and learning about the amazing birds, such as an owl, hawk and vulture. And we absolutely loved watching and cheering during the jousting show. The jousting contest also includes plenty of jokes, staged combat and swordplay, too, making a really entertaining show.
When you go, keep in mind that the Faire is huge and there are tons of shows to see. Give yourself plenty of time to explore and enjoy it! You can check out the schedule of events before you go to map out a game plan. And don’t forget your costume. Have fun!
