We’ve been excited about the news of a brand new, family-friendly science center opening up in Johnson City, and our wait to peek inside is almost over! On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Hill Country Science Mill will open it’s doors for a Grand Opening Celebration. This Valentine’s Day, everyone’s invited in to “fall in love with science” in a whole new, unique environment that sparks creative learning.
The Hill Country Science Mill, a non-profit science center, will introduce students to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields using interactive, engaging exhibits and programs. Housed in a historic gristmill and cotton gin in Johnson City, TX, this 14,000 square foot space features 35+ exhibits. The Hill Country Science Mill will focus on middle and high school students, but there is certainly fun to be had by visitors of ALL ages.
— Grand Opening Activities:
The museum opens on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m., and during the Grand Opening, the Science Mill will host a day-long carnival of hands-on science fun (in addition to the regular exhibits).
Schedule of events:
- 10 a.m. – Doors open
- 11 a.m. – Official ribbon-cutting and celebratory SystemsGo rocket launch
- 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Pedernales Electric display / photo opp in bucket
- 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Dr. Kold and his freezing science experiments
- 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Face painting by Sunshine the Mad Scientist
- 12-12:30 & 2-2:30 p.m. – Rainwater demonstration by Selah, Bamberger Ranch
- 2:30-3: p.m. – Dr. Kold and his freezing science experiments
- 3-3:30 p.m. – SystemsGo rocket demonstration and launch
- 4-6 p.m. – A special performance by Bobby Flores and the Yellow Rose Band featuring Rebecca Henricks
In addition, the following will be featured all day long:
- Great White Shark 3-D movie, every hour on the half hour
- Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park Chuck Wagon
- 4H Technology Team Maker Challenges
- Lissagraph Motorized Drawing Machine from Resonance Studio
- And more special activities and maker stations!
Proceeds from the Grand Opening will benefit the Science Mill’s Scholarship Program, which will help defray the admission and transportation costs for field trips and enrollment in science programs and camps for qualified students.
— Hours & Admission:
- Opening day/weekend hours are Saturday, Feb.14, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 15, 12-4 p.m.; and Monday, Feb. 16 (President’s Day), 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Regular museum hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 12-4 p.m.
- Admission is free for children under 2, $6.50 for ages 2-18 and students, $8 for adults, $6 for Seniors (65+) and Military.
