Austin Scottish Rite Theatre presents Jungle Book: Jangal Ki Kahani weekends through April 30. This show for children features a new take on Rudyard Kipling’s classic story with a little touch of Bollywood thrown in, too. Read a little more about the show, and enter to win a pair of tickets below.
There are a few things we always love about attending shows at Austin Scottish Rite Theatre. They really gear the whole experience towards making magic for young children. When you arrive, kids are handed programs for the show which double as coloring sheets. In the lobby, you’ll find cookies, water and other concessions for sale for only $1 each, which won’t break the bank when the little ones are begging for a snack. And when you enter the theater, kids are invited to sit in the very front on the carpet for the best views. If you have ones with wiggles, this is a perfectly fine place to try attending a play for the first time. Most parents are all in the same boat here, so a little bit of chatter and movement from the little ones is perfectly okay. No pressure, moms and dads, it’s a very laid-back theatre experience.
As for Jungle Book: Jangal Ki Kahani, this show was a great addition to the Scottish Rite’s season of family shows! The re-imagined tale of Mowgli and his friends was enhanced by the music of Austin’s Bollywood band, The Sacred Cowgirls, along with some choreography by Preya Patel of Devi School of Dance.
Halfway through the show, we heard a young child say to his dad was, “WOW, that was exciting!” And we couldn’t agree more. The show was visually vibrant with such lush scenery, plenty of live action, and impressive costume styling and use of puppetry.
Mowgli and his jungle friends Bhaloo, Kaa, Bandar, Bagheera, and even Shere Khan were such fun to watch. Bhaloo was so loveable, while Shere Khan was frightening (as he should be), and Bandar had everyone in stitches with her jokes.
One of the best things about Jungle Book, is that it’s interactive for the children. Kids can freely shout out to the characters, scream things like “watch out” to Mowgli when Shere Khan enters the stage, and even get on their feet to dance with them at the end of the show.
You can take the kids to enjoy this fun production on weekends through April 30. The play will be showing on April 15, 22 & 23, 29 & 30 at 11 a.m. as well as bonus shows at 1 p.m. on April 29 & 30. Tickets are free for kids under age 2; $8 for ages 2-11; $12 for ages 12 & up. You can purchase your tickets online here or at the theater.
