Meet Mueller’s “Nessy the Lakeness Dragon”

If you’ve been to Mueller Lake Park or the Thinkery recently, you’re sure to have noticed the huge sea monster with glowing blue eyes! Wondering what the story is behind this pretty sculpture? We were curious, too. Here’s the lowdown:

“Nessy the Lakeness Dragon” is the 16-feet high, 30-feet long, colorful creation from nationally renowned artist Dixie Friend Gay. Inspired by mythological water creatures, Dixie’s mosaic sculpture was made using handmade tiles to give the feeling of barnacles and other sea life. Be sure to look up-close to see all of the various glass tiles that she used to create such a cool texture to this work of art.

We first noticed Nessy during the East Austin Studio Tour when we stopped by the Blue Genie Art Industries. So we were really excited to see her fitting into her permanent home in Mueller.

  • the 23-foot tall iron spider sculpture (also created by Dixie Friend Gay)
  • “SunFlowers-An Electric Garden” located at Mueller along I-35
  • “Pollen Grain” and “Wigwam” in Mueller’s Southwest Greenway
Go check out Nessy in person. She’s such a sight to see!
