Austin Scottish Rite Theatre and The Hideout Theatre have teamed up to present an improv show for families that mashes up classic children’s stories in a really comical way. In Once Upon a Whaaa?! skilled improvisers from the Hideout Theatre completely remix well-known stories using suggestions from the audience. Since it’s improvised, each show is totally unique and full of lots of laughs.
You can check out Once Upon a Whaaa?! on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. through August 27 inside the historic Austin Scottish Rite Theatre. It’s a fun show for all ages!
The Do512 Family team had the opportunity to see this production last weekend, and we have to say we had many big laugh-out-loud moments. The Hideout Theatre cast is a joyful group of folks who are really great at interacting with kids. They encourage little ones to come sit right up front, shout out suggestions (when requested), and they even invited kids up on stage a few times to participate and do some dancing.
At one of the performances we got to watch, they took the old story of Rumpelstiltskin, as suggested by young audience member, but instead of spinning straw into gold, the Hideout characters were challenged to spin diamonds into everyone’s favorite Pokémon character, Pikachu. As you can imagine, this story was pretty hilarious and incredibly silly.
We were so impressed with the cast and their quick-witted improv skills. We’re sure that if you go to any of their performances, you’ll enjoy some very comical moments and lots of giggles.
Tickets are $8 for kids under age 12, and $12 for ages 12 and older. You can purchase your tickets at the door before the show or online here.
