Places for Hands-On Art for Kids

If your kids are into art and you’re looking for a place for them to get creative, either with a class or for a last-minute drop-in activity (or maybe even to keep the mess somewhere other than at home), this is the list for you.

Walk-in Spots

The Art Garage | Two Austin locations here | At Art Garage, you can walk in and create at any time. There are options for pottery, mosaics, glass, and more. Art Garage also has summer camps and holiday camps, as well as fun, themed one-off classes.

Upstairs Circus | 234 W. 2nd Street | This DIY space is geared more towards adults and is complete with a bar, but kids are welcome as long as they have an adult with them (and a waiver if they’re going with someone other than a parent). Some of Upstairs Circus’ projects include making custom sneakers, jewelry, distressed wood art, and 22 other options here.

Cafe Monet Art Studio | 4477 S. Lamar | Cafe Monet offers walk-in pottery painting, and clay molding classes, as well as classes for learning to throw pottery. They also offer summer camps here.


Art Classes and Book Ahead Options

Austin Creative Art Center | (Classes and Drop-ins with registration) | You can schedule a drop-in at Austin Creative Arts Center, which books you for two hours and includes all supplies. You’ll get to explore with medium(s) of your choice: acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, graphite, and more. Austin Creative Arts Center also has after school classes, adult classes, camps, and events. Get all the info here.

Figment Creative Labs | 7809 Brodie Lane | Figment has a huge library materials so kids can lead the way with tinkering, crafting, and building. They have camps, classes, workshops, and more, and you can check out their current schedule and age requirements for each class or session here. Figment also has an adorable menagerie of animals including goats, cats, birds, chickens, reptiles, amphibians, and a variety of small furry creatures who bring happiness and inspiration to all who visit.

Cordovan Art School | Lots of ATX locations here | Cordovan has tons of options for kids’ classes, and camps for every school break. They have regularly scheduled after school classes as well as drop-in events like Family Wheel Workshop and Parent and Child Pottery Workshops. Check here for locations and schedules.

Laguna Gloria Art School | 3809 West 35th Street | Laguna Gloria offers kids’ art classes year-round, as well as spring and summer camps, and one-off parent and child workshops during the school year. The subjects and content of the classes are always changing, but we’re seeing classes like wheel throwing, watercolors, classical drawing and painting and so much more for kids here. Laguna Gloria also has special art events for families called “Arty Party”, as well as family-friendly activities everysecond Saturday of the month. Check the schedule here.

Painting with a Twist | Multiple Austin locations here | With kids classes starting around $27, Painting with a Twist has classes for painters ages 5 and older. Advance reservations are required and you can check out their upcoming kid-friendly events here.

Art Barn ATX | 14284 FM 2769 (located near Oasis restaurant and Volente Beach) | ATX Art Barn is by appointment only. It’s a space for hosting birthday parties, has day, seasonal, and summer camps for kids, a Tuesday After School Class for kids, and more. Check it out here.
