Cat lovers, rejoice! The very first cat café in Texas is now open right here in East Austin! Blue Cat Café brings adorable, adoptable kitties to the community in a really cool coffeehouse space.

For those not familiar with the concept of a cat café, this may sound really out there. Popular in Japan, cat cafés are hot spots for individuals who want the companionship of animals but live in apartments that don’t allow pets. Within a cat café, you can pet and cuddle with many cats — almost like an indoor pet rental or a petting zoo for customers of all ages.

So, it’s not a place to bring your cat. It’s a place to hang out and enjoy the company of friendly felines.

Blue Cat Café’s main objective is to find forever homes for these cats. They’ve partnered with the Austin Humane Society to bring in adoptable cats. So if you’re looking for a cat for your own pet, you can spend some time with the animals within Blue Cat Café and get to know them to see if there’s a feline friend there that’s just right for you. You can click here to view all the details about the adoption process.

There is a food trailer on the patio that serves up coffee, hot chocolate and vegan comfort food such as “cat dogs” and tex mex options. The owners opted for a vegan menu as to not tempt the kitties with real meat. So the cats can be focused on new friends, not food. Click here to view the menu.

You’ll also find plenty of cool cat products for sale  — from food and litter to furniture and toys — in the café and their online store.

We had the chance to check out Blue Cat Café with the kids recently, and we loved the experience of snuggling up and getting cozy with the cats. (There were 23 cats there during our visit!)  Children are welcome at any time, as long as they are supervised by parents. There are plenty of kitty toys around the café for anyone to play with. And you’re absolutely free to walk around and play with the animals. Kids will be wowed by the giant climbing tree within the center of the cafe as well as seeing cats settle into a see-through perch high up near the ceiling.

Entrance to the Blue Cat Café is $5 per adult (but it is refunded if you purchase food and drinks). There is also a student rate of $3, and if you are coming with a large family or group, just ask about special family pricing because they noted that they do not want to penalize families with more children. Take note that you do have to sign a waiver upon entrance, since you are dealing with live animals.
