On Saturday, Apr. 18, kids of all ages will be in awe when 3,500 live butterflies take flight during the 17th Annual Butterfly Festival at EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens in Wimberley, TX. Area students and businesses are carefully tending to cages of caterpillars, eagerly awaiting the moment that they become beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. From 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, families can enjoy free admission (donations accepted) at this event that includes games, crafts, nature activities, live entertainment and of course, butterflies!

The day begins with an Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. featuring the posting of the colors at the Veterans Memorial Plaza atop the EmilyAnn’s hill. Following, there will be a dedication of the new Texas flagpole, a moving memorial release of butterflies honoring lives lost, and a Commemorative Air Force flyover (weather permitting).

The festival offers something for everyone with lots of family entertainment and butterfly releases every 30 minutes throughout the day. Check out butterfly themed art, exhibits, games, pirate and princess tents with costumed characters, concessions and more.

Event sponsors, Seton Medical Center Hays and Brookshire Brothers, will host a “Healthy Living” area featuring healthy snacks and free health screenings. The Wimberley Lions Club will provide free vision screenings.

Hays County Master Naturalists will be on hand with a variety of nature activities. Back Into Nature will be displaying snakes and reptiles, and a fish viewing tank will give children the opportunity to take a close look at some of the creatures that live in our local rivers and streams.
