Have you ever explored the Mexic-Arte Museum downtown on Congress Ave.? Our Content Manager and her eight-year-old son stopped in over the weekend. Admission is free every Sunday and every day during the month of December!

My kids and I love the annual Viva la Vida Festival downtown and enjoy the beauty of the procession celebrating Dia de los Muertos, but surprisingly, we have never actually been inside the Mexic-Arte Museum. This past Sunday, after a few days of feeling cooped up in the house post-holiday festivities, my eight-year-old and I decided to venture downtown to take a peek at what’s in store at this museum. (Always free on Sundays from noon – 5 p.m.)

Currently, visitors can enjoy free admission through January 4, 2015 for Mix ‘n’ Mash —  a group exhibition and art sale featuring original works of art created by local, national, and international artists for sale. The theme for this year’s sale is the Lotería card game. (Lotería, a game of chance similar to Bingo, is played with a set of 54 images printed on a deck of cards.)

My oldest son loves art, and he’s got a pretty great attention span for museums and galleries. We spent some time walking through the exhibit and noting pieces that we liked. However, I was pretty relieved that I decided to leave my other two younger boys at home with my husband. I think they would have been pretty wild and wiggly in the museum since there is nothing hands-on for children to do currently, and I think they would have wanted to just run and/or touch everything. (The Mexic-Arte Museum does offer free Family Day events four times per year, and Do512 Family will be sure to let you know about the next one when it is scheduled!)

The museum has an impressive little gift shop where you can find some beautiful handmade items from Mexico. If you go with kids, keep in mind that they do also sell little toys and even have a case of yummy-looking frozen treats that kids may beg for.
