Top 10 Weekend Family Events: May 20-22, 2016

This weekend you can take the family to Deutschen Pfest, listen to music in Mueller Park, see Darth Vader on ice skates, make recycled robots, check out a summer safety fair, see a thousand origami cranes, splash into Deep Eddy’s pool party, see children’s theatre — and much more!

— Get ready for Pflugerville’s most popular festival, the Deutschen Pfest, held at Pfluger Park today through Sunday. This annual event is always packed with good times for the whole family with carnival rides, games, shopping booths, a parade, live music, petting zoo, puppet show, a 5K fun run — and lots more. Admission today is only $5, and kids ages 6 & under are free. Click here for more details.

— Take the kids to Mueller Lake Park Amphitheater for the last night of the free, family-friendly music series: KUTX Live at Mueller.  The Que Pastas will play at 7 p.m. followed by Hard Proof at 7:45 p.m. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, meet your friends. Food trucks will also be onsite. Free parking is available in the Mueller garage, adjacent to the Thinkery.

— Star Wars fans can see Luke, Darth, Yoda, Leia, Han, Rey, Chewy at Chaparral Ice Center‘s spring show — The Force on Ice. This ice skating production will feature all 7 movies (without any of the new spoilers) with parodies, storm troopers, and podraces! You can see this tonight at 7:15 p.m. or tomorrow at 5 p.m. Tickets are $5-$20 which you can purchase online here.

— Make Recycled Robots at The Contemporary Austin’s Laguna Gloria. Kids ages 2-11 are invited to participate in a free art-making workshop from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Put everyday materials together to form a robotic work of art, then stop by the animation station to bring your friend to life and watch it make art on its own! Free, but you must register here.

— View the unveiling of the Thousand Cranes of Peace art installation at the Asian American Resource Center. This free family-friendly celebration takes place from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and  includes origami crafts for kids, an Asian fashion show, taiko drumming, storytelling and more!

— Head over to the Mueller Hangar from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for Safe Kids Day. Enjoy safety-focused activities such as a bike rodeo, water safety games and a visit from a fire truck. There will also be plenty of giveaways including booster seats, life jackets, and helmets. Free event.

— Today’s your last chance to see Alice in Wonderland at ZACH Theatre. Catch a performance today at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. In this unique adaption, the audience starts in the theatre and then follows Alice around ZACH’s campus on an adventure, meeting familiar characters, and helping to defeat the Red Queen. Tickets are $18 for youth and $23 for adults, which you can purchase online here or by calling ZACH’s box office at 512-476-0541 x1.

— It’s pool party time! Head over to Deep Eddy Pool to help celebrate 100 years of swimming in one of Austin’s favorite spots. This free event will take place from 5-9 p.m. Enjoy live music, a synchronized swimming performance, face painters, balloon twisters and fire dancers. Free admission! Click here for more info.

 

FamTopPicks-OnSite_Sunday (1)— Today’s your last day to see Pollyanna Theatre Company’s play, Young Bear: The Story of Frances Slocum. You can see it today at 2 p.m. at the Long Center. It’s inspired by the true events of a young girl who lived with Native Americans in the Mid-West in the 1800s. Suited for kids in grades 2-5. Tickets are $12, which you can purchase online here.
