Who’s ready to sing “happy birthday” to our hometown? On Saturday, August 7 you can celebrate Austin‘s 182nd birthday with fun happenings in the 2ND St. District and Republic Square.

Did you know? The Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation celebrates Austin’s Birthday Bash in August to commemorate the anniversary of when the first lots of land were auctioned under the Auction Oaks in what is today Republic Square.

You can get an early start on the celebration in the 2nd Street District from 4 – 6 p.m. where you’ll find free face painters set up near Jo’s Coffee along with roaming balloon twisters and a sidewalk sale. Those who snap a picture while there and tag @2NDStDistrict on Instagram will be entered to win a $100 gift card to a 2ND St. District business of their choice.

The big party runs from 5 – 10 p.m. in Republic Square. Austin’s Birthday Bash is a free family-friendly community celebration featuring live music, creative arts, and good food, too. Here’s what to expect:

  • The first 400 attendees can pick up free bandanas.
  • Enjoy complimentary creative kits for kids, including coloring pages by artist Lakeem Wilson.
  • Salt & Time Café will be offering $4 hot dogs and $4 Fireman’s Light Beer along with 10% off the rest of their menu.
  • Entertainment will be headlined by Grammy-award nominated singer, SaulPaul and Friends.
  • Check out the Austin debut of the Passion Flower, a functional art piece created by Edward Balassanian for the 2019 Burning Man music festival as well a live painting of a mural by artist, Niz.
