Cat in the Hat premiered at ZACH Theatre over the weekend and Do512 Family editor had a chance to take her 8-year-old son and his friend. Here are her thoughts…
I was a little apprehensive about the show because I was bringing two 8-year-old-boys, and I thought they might be a little too old for the production. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I figured we’d go anyway, who doesn’t LOVE Dr. Seuss?
The boys and I were pleasantly surprised! While it really is a simple re-reading of the book, the set design and clever effects made it fun to watch and had all of the children laughing and interacting.
The set and costumes looked exactly like Dr. Seuss illustrations. All of the characters: the Cat in the Hat, the kids, the fish, Thing One and Thing Two, all looked like they stepped right out of the book. It was so simple-looking yet so well done, the kids and I were singing ZACH’s praises. In fact, my son’s friend said that this was the funniest play he had seen at ZACH Theatre, so, kudos!
The play was around 45 minutes long, which is so perfect for kids and I am always thankful that ZACH Theatre is keen on the fact that little ones can’t sit still for too long. Despite this, ZACH Theatre never skips on quality, which leaves families happy and excited for future productions.
Other info:
- Snacks are available for purchase (they had some yummy Cat in the Hat-themed cookies).
- If you arrive early, there is a courtyard in front of the theatre where kids can run around. I suggest you let them do this to get out their energy before the show.
- Kids can talk to the characters and take pictures with them in the lobby after the show.
Cat in the Hat plays every weekend until May 3, see the full schedule here. Tickets are $20 – $22 and can be purchased here or at the box office beforehand.
