Once again ZACH Theatre presents a show for families that appeals just as equally to adults. Our team had the chance to watch their latest production, This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries This Girl Does Nothing, and we thoroughly enjoyed the production as much as (maaaaybe more than) our kids. Read all about it…
This show comes from Irish-born playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer who is known for his commitment to create “strong and respectful work” for children, which certainly shines through in this production, geared towards ages 7 and up. The play is presented in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance, and is showing in the intimate Whisenhunt’s theatre-in-the-round on January 13, 19, 20, & 26 at 2 p.m. with a special evening performance on January 25 at 7 p.m.
In the show, you watch the story of three sisters who are abandoned in the forest and forced to find their own way in the world. One goes left, one goes right, and one stays right where she started, although each has her own very interesting journey along the way until they meet up again in adulthood.
This script was really enchanting, and the actors were so captivating — such a strong ensemble of talented storytellers! The cozy theater is such a perfect place for immersive staging, inviting us to watch each character’s personal experiences growing up. The show creatively uses shadow puppetry and simple props such as a small ladder that transforms into a lighthouse, a mansion, etc. making it so visually interesting to watch. All elements of the production were simply so well done, full of thoughtfulness and just the right dose of sweetness.
