Some of our favorite Austin museums have recently reopened, giving us an opportunity for an activity outside of our own home! Museums offer a fun family field trip to appeal to all ages in which you can can dive into art, history, science and more!

Most museums have reservations and limited capacities to help safely regulate crowds, so please review the health and safety procedure of each location before you plan a visit. 

Here’s an overview of which Austin museums are open:

Bullock Museum
Austin’s Texas history museum has reopened its galleries, IMAX® Theatre, and Museum Store with modified hours — now open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. with advanced tickets and new safety procedures. Thinkery
Austin’s favorite for young kids, the Thinkery reopened it’s doors over Labor Day weekend. Thinkery is  deploying a new “Path To Play” model, which allows small groups of 10 to move throughout the museum in a timed and sequenced fashion to maintain proper social distancing and minimize interaction with other guests. Guests will be assigned to a specific 10-person group that will move through the museum with 15 minutes of dedicated exploration in each of the six open galleries. Reserve your tickets online here.

Blanton Museum of Art
The Blanton Museum of Art reopened its doors to the public with reservations and additional precautions. Currently, guests can explore the Avant-garde Networks of Amauta, Ed Ruscha: Drum Skins, and The Artist at Work exhibits on display. Visit here for reservations, updates, and information.

UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum
The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum reopened with a limit of 30 visitors in the Garden at a time. Advanced tickets are suggested, which you can get online here. The UMLAUF is the perfect example of when nature and art collide. Bring the family out to enjoy the beautiful landscape and art by Charles Umlauf. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
A great spot for a little nature walk, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is open with a reservation system in place for safety precautions. You can schedule an entry time that will help the limit numbers of guests in order to maintain safe and appropriate social distancing as you stroll through their garden paths. Laguna Gloria
The Contemporary Austin’s Laguna Gloria location is currently open requiring advanced ticket reservations for all visitors, which you can purchase online here. Opening hours are currently limited to Thursdays – Sundays and groups are limited to 6 people.

Mexic-Arte Museum
With a lack of travel these days, this museum will scratch that adventurous itch while staying in Austin. Science Mill
Grab the kids and get excited because Science Mill is open! Bring your thinking cap and discover the same hands-on experience with safety procedures to ensure a safe fun-filled adventure. Visit www.sciencemill.org for tickets and updates.

Pioneer Farms
Experience a new kind of cabin fever at Austin’s very own Pioneer Farms. With new COVID-19 procedures underway, the family can travel back to the 1890s safely. Zilker Botanical Garden
Located on 28 acres within Zilker Park, the Botanical Garden features themed gardens such as the Taniguchi Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, and Hartman Prehistoric Garden. For details about the reopening plans, please visit zilkergarden.org.
