UPDATE: Due to the threat of severe weather on Saturday, the 3rd Annual Danger Derby has been postponed to Sunday, Nov. 23. The Junior Danger Derby will remain as scheduled on Sunday.

Held during the East Austin Studio Tour, this 3rd Annual Danger Derby includes unique pinewood “art cars” that will race down a two-story 20 foot tall, 100 foot long track runs from the roof of Blue Genie Headquarters. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first race starting at 6 p.m., and the event wraps up around 10 p.m. This is a free event and open to the public.

On Sunday, Nov. 23 between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Blue Genie is joining forces with the Thinkery to present the first ever Junior Danger Derby for kids age 3-12. The event is free, but space is limited. Please click here to register to participate.  Adults will assist kids with creating a vehicle out of a pinewood block or recycled materials. These creations will travel down the 20ft tall, 100ft long track, and participants can take home what they make.

“art cars”

At the nighttime event, you’ll find local food trucks, music, and drinks sponsored by the local Austin favorites: Tito’s Vodka, Thirsty Planet Brewery, and Austin Eastciders. Families are most welcome, but the event organizers note that the Danger Derby may not be appropriate for all ages and parents may bring their kids at their own discretion. Parents of little ones should know:

  • While the track is blocked off for safety, there will be more dangerous hazards than the Junior Derby.
  • There will be drinking as well as open bars (21+, of course).
  • Commentators will be providing more “colorful” commentary during the races that may not be appropriate for all ages.
  • Some of the cars will have sculptures that display more “adult” content and may not be appropriate for all ages.
