At this point of summer, we’re doing our best to keep cool while keeping the kids entertained, which means visiting as many indoor, air-conditioned play spaces as we can. When we heard about the newly opened Game-Z Galaxy in North Austin, we jumped at the opportunity to check it out!

The owners of Game-Z Galaxy wanted to build a community-focused space where kids are invited to come in and unplug from technology, put screens and mobile phones away for awhile and just have some old-fashioned fun. Game-Z Galaxy is an entirely electronics-free center that offers 9 holes of mini golf, pool tables, ping pong, unique carnival-style games and a wide variety of board games and books, too.

Family owned and operated in the Anderson Mill area, Game-Z Galaxy’s mission is to invite real person-to-person social connections at a time when so many of us are so tied to gaming devices, apps, and other forms of technology as a social outlet. Owners Taruna & Ashwani Ahuja had a desire to build a safe, fun environment that would sparking kids curiosity, and noted…

“We want to bring back the culture of using the body and mind, develop cognitive and social skills in our children and de-addict them from cell phones and electronics as the primary source of entertainment. At Game-Z Galaxy, we want to do what we can to reverse this trend or provide an alternative, at least for a few hours.

On our visit to Game-Z Galaxy, one of the first things we appreciated was the peaceful, relaxed environment. Some indoor play spaces are so loud and overwhelming, but Game-Z has a quiet vibe without lots of loud stimuli, perhaps this might appeal to families looking for sensory-friendly environments. Our kids first wanted to play mini golf, and did several rounds. Then they moved on to ping pong and pool, noting that there are not many places that offer billiards for kids to play. The one thing that they enjoyed most was the unique hand-made skill games — no tokens required — so they could play again and again.

There are a few rooms set up with tables so that kids can play a variety of board games and puzzles. The rooms are very cozy and comfortable, like being in a friend’s house. These spaces can be booked for parties, also.

We spent about 2 hours there, and the kids had a great time! Everything is included with the price of admission — $15 or $5 for children under age 5 — so you can enjoy your favorite activities again and again. We have not been anywhere just like Game-Z Galaxy before, and we really appreciate having a new play space in Austin.
