We can’t think of a much better way to celebrate all the goodness of the spring season than by running around a farm, having a picnic and listening to live music with friends. Johnson’s Backyard Garden is hosting their annual Spring Picnic & 5K Garden Gallop on Saturday, March 31, and we’re all invited!

This is a great time check out the 200 acre farm, nestled just along the Colorado River with endless rows of tomatoes, carrot beds, and more. Johnson’s Backyard Garden truly did start in a local family’s backyard but has since grown to a 1,000-member community supported agriculture operation (CSA) serving high-quality organic produce to the Austin community. (Scroll below for more info about the CSA and a discount code for Do512 Family readers).

What’s the Garden Gallop?
This short 5K (3.1 mile) loop through the farm starts at 11 a.m. sharp and is perfect for runners and walkers, alike. It’s a great way to see a working organic farm — skip past composts pile, jog through towers of tomatoes. For small kiddos, there’s also a shorter, Kids Fun-Run. Click here for a course map.

What to Know About the Spring Picnic:
Even if you choose to skip the Gallop all-together, you’re still welcome to the Picnic that runs from 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.! Bring a blanket to relax on the lawn, and enjoy some live tunes while the kids explore the surrounding fields and ginormous sand pile or take part in activities such as an “egg” hunt and arts and crafts. Johnny Nicholas and Scrappy Judd Newcomb will be gracing the stage at 11:15 a.m., followed by Oscar Ornelas at 1 p.m. The Ginger Armadillo will be serving some fresh food for purchase. You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, beverages (BYOB) and dancing shoes! (Please leave dogs at home.)
