Have you ever wondered about the adorable little houses full of books in people’s yards?  These Little Free Libraries are set up as a way to read a beloved book left by someone, and leave a book you’re willing to part with for someone else to read.  A pay-it-forward of literature, if you will.  We thought it would be cute to share where you can find Little Free Libraries in ATX, as well as how to start your own.  There are more than 100,000 Little Free Libraries in 120 countries, with more than 300 million books shared, and the idea behind the program is access to books for everyone.  Here are more details you’ll want to know:

How to Start Your Little Free Library

With a motto of “Take a Book, Share a Book”, The Little Free Library has tips for how to start your own:

  • Choose a location with foot traffic, as well as a steward to care for your Little Free Library
  • Build a library.  You can build your little structure however you like, or you can purchase one here.
  • Register your library with an official charter sign and number
  • Set up a Steward Account and have the option to add your Little Free Library to their map
  • Get community support.  The Little Free Library suggests holding an opening ceremony (swoon!) to let people know they can give and take from your little library
