We’re huge fans of Austin Museum Day!  Every September, local museums open their doors to visitors completely free.  This annual occasion gives us the chance to explore exhibits with plenty of special family-friendly activities throughout the day. Read on for our picks of museum programming that is especially family-focused on Sunday, September 22, 2024!

Where to take the kids on Austin Museum Day

Get a look at life in the 1800s at Pioneer Farms.

Pioneer Farms
Special activities from 11 am – 2 pm

Step back in time to when Texas was an untamed frontier. Visit Pioneer Farms’ restored historic homesteads, take a guided tour, see blacksmiths at work, listen to live music, and see historical exhibits and reenactments. Neill-Cochran House Museum
Special activities from 11 am –  4 pm


This year the Neill-Cochran House Museum celebrates Austin Museum Day with live music, a keychain-making activity, ice cream and lemonade making, lawn games, scavenger hunts, and more.  Check here for more info and the full schedule.

LBJ Presidential Library & Museum
Special activities from 9:30 am – 3 pm 

For Austin Museum Day this year, head to LBJ Presidential Library and Museum for free admission, arts and crafts for all ages exemplifying the beauty of Hispanic cultures, story time for kids, an afternoon on the Plaza with paletas & music from Sofrito y Su Melao from 12:30 pm – 3 pm, and more! Elisabet Ney Museum
Open from 12 – 5 pm

Celebrate Elisabet Ney Museum’s current exhibit, Super Modeling, on Austin Museum Day by exploring the processes that Elisabet Ney used to execute her own neoclassical sculptures. The Museum will present a portrait sculpting demo by local artist, Dana Younger. There will also be a ton of interactive sculpting activities, portraiture lessons, and edible sculptures that participants can take home. Click here to register on Facebook.

Bullock Museum
Special activities from 10 am – 2 pm

For Museum Day 2024, The Bullock Museum will have special activities for children and families from 10 am – 2 pm. Explore the connection between Texas History and Math through hands-on activities, creative projects, storytime, and demonstrations with MathHappens. You’ll also get to experience the sounds of Native American flutes as you explore the galleries, as well as see the hardships, clothing, jobs, and daily activities of a cowboy with the Williamson Museum.
