Do512 Family - What to do in Austin with Kids

What We Did in Austin This Week

We’ve been out and about! From new-to-us spots and old favorites to some very Austin ways to spend a day, here’s a peek at what the Do512 Family crew has been up to lately, and a few ideas to add to your own family fun list.

Friday Night

We were very brave and let our fifth grader have his twin friends sleep over. They swam, demolished some Chick-fil-A, watched Toy Story 5 and stayed up much later than they probably should have. We sent everyone home happy the next morning after a WOW Donuts run.

Izumi Japanese Sushi & Grill via Yelp

Saturday

After fueling the sleepover crew with donuts, we headed to our high schooler’s orchestra rehearsal. That evening, we tried Izumi Sushi, a new-to-us Japanese spot. Our vegetarian may have enjoyed it most of all with an off-menu vegetable roll wrapped in soy paper.

Sunday

We headed to Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas. We usually save it for Tuesdays when movies are discounted, but it was the final weekend before school started, and 100 or so degrees outside, so we splurged a little. We ate dinner at the theater, shared some truffle fries and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderfully campy dinosaur extravaganza The End of Oak Street.

Editor’s note: Our kids are older, and this one is rated PG-13. Parents may want to check the content first because the dinosaurs do, in fact, behave like animals, lol.

Mayre’s Gourmet Pizza via Yelp

Monday

School mornings are officially back! After getting everyone out the door, we had a working lunch at Marye’s Gourmet Pizza before the evening shuffle of music lessons at Strait Music. The avocado cucumber gazpacho was surprisingly refreshing and delicious in the Austin heat, and we also love that the self-serve tea station has fresh mint and lemon you can add to your heart’s desire. Delish!

Hokkaison Japanese Market & Fresh Sushi

Tuesday

After school, we made a quick trip to Hokkaisan Japanese Market & Fresh Sushi on South Congress. The kids loved browsing, and we came away with some favorite snacks, a viral peach ice cream cake, pork katsu and nigiri. They have sushi-grade fish and even Japan’s famous whipped cream and strawberry sandwiches, though we saw H-E-B Sushiya is selling those now, too!

We’ll definitely be back. We just wish our haul came with Japan prices!

F45 Westlake FB

Wednesday

Work and F45. It’s our favorite full-body workout because the music is great and you can fit a lot into 45 minutes. Plus we like Wednesdays because it’s not a cardio day, at the Westlake location at least!

Thursday

We wrapped up the week with happy hour at Uchibā. We hadn’t been in a while, but its daily happy hour is still a great value. The edamame dumplings were so good that we ordered them twice, and the $10 espresso martini was excellent.

Week Wrapped:

⭐ Best bite: Uchibā’s edamame dumplings

👧 Biggest kid win: A successful triple sleepover with everyone still wanting to be friends after

☕ Coffee of the week: Does an espresso martini count?

📅 On deck: We haven’t been to A Hole Coffee and our teenager is super excited to try it!
