Gooey, crispy, dipped in tomato soup. You know what we’re talking about – an epic grilled cheese sandwich. This is one of those foods that, sure, we can all make for ourselves. But sometimes it tastes even better when someone else makes it for us. Grilled Cheese Month is one of those Made Up Holidays we’re super into so we wanted to share our picks for Where to Find The Best Grilled Cheese in Austin.
— 24 Diner: One of the things that makes 24 Diner’s Grilled Cheese special is that you can get it around the clock. It doesn’t hurt that they make them extra cheesy and delicious, complete with cheddar, Havarti, and roasted tomato.
— Bouldin Creek Cafe: This place is hard to beat in general. But their Grilled Cheese Con Hierbas in particular is a grand slam. It’s filled with melted cheddar/jack cheese with your choice of fresh basil or cilantro on grilled sourdough bread, plus you can add tomato, red onion, spinach, or jalapenos.
— Burro Cheese Kitchen: This Rainey Street trailer serves up hearty grilled cheese sandwiches like their OG made on King’s Hawaiian bread and stuffed with Havarti cheese. Grab a side of tomato basil soup and dunk away!
— Garbo’s: Now with a second brick-and-mortar location in ATX, as well as multiple food truck locations, you’ve got lots of locations to choose from to get a Lobster Grilled Cheese. That’s right. Lobster. Grilled Cheese. They also have a great kids menu and were featured on our Restaurants with Play Spaces Around Austin.
— Haymaker: This Manor neighborhood bar LOVES cheese. They offer a Margherita grilled cheese with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and homemade basil-pecan pesto, and the heavenly Nutty Grilled Cheese with Pecans, Grand Cru gruyere, sliced apples, and mixed greens.
— Rebel Cheese: This artisan, vegan cheese shop is adorable and has incredible dairy-free cheese made from plants. They have a classic (and yummy!) grilled cheese and tomato soup on their menu, as well as a “Build Your Own Melt”. Start with mozzarella and creamy cheddar on grilled rustic sourdough and customize with options like strawberry habanero, turkey, or avocado. Check out Rebel Cheese Austin here.
— Spread & Co.: This cafe is known for its cheeses and lucky for us, they’re open for breakfast and lunch serving up tasty, yummy eats. heir grilled cheese is made of three hand-selected cheeses and grilled on brioche bread. Grab one of those for yourself and a kid’s grilled cheese with cheddar on brioche. Bon appetite!
— The Soup Peddler: Grilled cheese and soup go together like champagne and caviar. The Soup Peddler has three options to choose from, including cheddar, green apple muenster, or pesto provolone. All three will make your soup happy.
— Wholly Cow Burgers: Wholly Cow Burgers is known primarily as South Austins premier location for organically-raised beef patties, hand-cut fries & farm-fresh produce. Besides that, they’ve also got a fantastic Grilled Cheese Sandwich called Golden Gates IV and it’s stacked to the brim with heaps of delicious cheddar.
