Mother’s Day Flowers that Last Forever

In the midst of this pandemic, our moms are working overtime to teach us, keep us healthy, and keep us entertained. Show her how much you appreciate her by turning common household items into a lovely bouquet that she can keep forever!

I’ve been a preschool teacher for 8 years and have owned Brightside Eco School in the Crestview neighborhood for 4 years. One of my favorite things to celebrate is Mothers Day.  I love working with my kids to show their moms how much we love them, so I will show you how to do it at home with items you most likely have lying around.

Watch the video below or simply follow along with the directions…

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Some coffee filters
  • Scissors
  • Water spray bottle
  • Stick (any old stick will do)
  • Washable markers
  • Tape/Glue/Rubber Band (any of these items will work!)

1. The first step is to color the coffee filter(s) with markers.  Make sure to color with a thick tip and cover the entire coffee filter! (The more space covered on the filter, the more vibrant the outcome!)

2. Once you’ve colored your coffee filters, it’s time to spray it with water! I like to use a water bottle to spray it with (the kids love it and it’s good for their fine motor development! *win/win*), but you can also just dip it in water. As long as it is completely submerged, you should be good!

3. Let that dry (it takes only a couple of minutes…less if you set it outside in the sun!) But know that if you lay it on a surface it will bleed through to whatever you lay it on! Good thing it’s a washable marker, right!?

4. Once it’s dried, you’ll fold the coffee filter in half over and over again until you have a small triangle like this:

4. Next, you’ll cut the top edges off. Unfold the filter and VOILA! a pretty flower!

5. Repeat these steps as many times as you like! The more layers you make, the fluffier the flower.
Layer all your flowers on top of each other and punch a hole in the middle with your stick or scissors. (Your kiddo may need a little assistance with this step)

6. Last, you’ll just pinch and fold the flower up the stem and glue/tape/secure with a rubber band the underside of the flower to the stick. Fluff the flower top and you’ve made a beautiful flower for your hardworking, fun-loving mom!
