August is National Family Fun Month and the perfect reminder to take a break and have some carefree playtime with the kids before they head back to school. There are endless opportunities for silly family moments! In fact, something as simple as taking the kids to play and eat at Hat Creek Burger Company, named “best kid-friendly restaurant in Texas” by Food Network, offers a great opportunity for good times with the kids. Here’s some more of our top ideas for celebrating Family Fun this month in Austin…

— Picnic at a Playground
There are so many great public playgrounds in the Austin area! Swing by your local Hat Creek to pick up breakfast on the go (before the park gets too hot), and enjoy an early picnic in your favorite park! Check out our list of The Best Playgrounds in Austin (and surrounding areas) for ideas on where to go.

— Swim & Splash
Kids just love when Mom and Dad jump in the pool to play with them! Get out some fun floats, lather up the sunscreen and hit the water for some cool playtime. — See a Show
“Wow” the kids with live entertainment! There’s still time to check out the Free ZIlker Summer Musical, All Shook Up. You can also get tickets to ZACH Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast, Circus Chicken Dog’s The Wizard of Dogz, or see this year’s Summer Musical for Children, HONK!.

— Go to an Outdoor Concert
Take advantage of all the free summer concerts happening around Austin. When the sun sets, you can settle onto a blanket with the family and listen to some great tunes from local musicians. Check out the Domain Concert Series, hear the Austin Symphony Orchestra perform on the Long Center Lawn on Sundays, head to the Shady Grove for Unplugged at the Grove every Thursday evening.

— Watch a Movie
We love sitting with the kids and watching a good family flick that sparks their imagination or gives us all big belly laughs. Beyond blockbusters at your favorite local theatre, there’s tons of other special movie events happening all over Austin this summer. Join us for the last Sound & Cinema of the season, or visit Community Cinema at Community First Village for their Friday night outdoor screenings, check out the Austin Parks Foundation’s lineup of Movies in the Park! — Visit an Amusement Park
Personally, some of our favorite summertime childhood memories are of exciting days at amusement parks. Throwing our hands in the air as we sped down the roller coasters, chased our siblings in bumper cars, getting soaked on the water rides, and eating cotton candy. Check out this round-up of area amusement parks & water parks like Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Austin’s Park n’ Pizza, or Typhoon Texas, and have a great day out!

Kids and parents alike can enjoy some arts & crafts time together, and besides doing things at home, there are also plenty of local places to dive into some hands-on making. Stop into a Crafternoon session with the Austin Public Library, check out this list of 10 Places for Makers in Austin, and this roundup of Where to Get Artsy in Austin.

— Take a Family Hike
You can’t beat fresh air and some nature exploration! We know it’s very hot out there these days, but you can take a stroll in the early morning (take lots of water with you) and pick a spot that takes you near water to cool down, like McKinney Falls or Emma Long Metro Park, or pick a spot that offers a bit of indoor air-conditioned respite like the Austin Nature & Science Center or Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Also check out our list of 10 Best Hikes for Families in Austin.

— Play at an Indoor Fun Center
We’re not ones to sit on the sidelines at an indoor jumpy place. What perfect places to act like a kid again! There’s plenty of indoor fun centers in the Austin area for trampolines, bowling, rock climbing, arcades and more! Check out our list of Top Places Play Indoors in Austin, as well as our list of Where to Bowl for Free this Summer, and Family Friendly Arcades in Austin — and go wild (in the a/c)!

— Go Out for Sweet Treats
I scream, you scream! Nothing beats a nice cold treat on a hot summer day. Going out for milkshakes (like our favorites from Hat Creek) or ice cream cones, snow cones or gourmet ice pops, offers guaranteed smiles for the youngest to oldest in the fam. Here’s some ideas on Where to Get Cold Treats. But if that doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, check out this list of The Sweetest Candy Shops in Austin.
